October marks the beginning of trout season, with Rotorua lakes Okataina, Rotoiti, and Tarawera the destination for hundreds of enthusiastic trout fishers.

The lakes have been closed to boat fishing since the end of June and while other lakes are available for trout fishing, it is these three lakes locally that provide an opening day thrill for anglers, says Fish & Game.

The organisation is also reminding those intending to venture out that this is the time to engage in some early season preparation.

“Servicing or checking that the boat and trailer are ship-shape, topping up the tackle box with some new lures, and checking the lines plus renewing the fishing licences will all ensure the opening day goes smoothly,” said Fish & Game.

A survey will also be carried out on the lakes on 1 October as part of Fish & Game’s monitoring and anglers will be asked how their day had gone, how many fish they have caught for the day, and their catches will be weighed and measured.

Matt Osborne of Fish & Game says it’s one of the most popular days of the whole season.

“It’s a wonderful day for families. People get out on the lakes enjoying the great outdoors combined with the opportunity to catch a trout.”
