There is more than one reason for anglers to head to the trophy lakes this October. Eastern Fish & Game are offering keen fishers at the Rotorua Lakes a chance to fish for gold.
The tagged trout promotion will run for 13 days from 1 October and one lucky fisher could bag a $10,000 prize.
Fish & Game will be releasing 30 Fish for Gold tagged rainbow trout into Lakes Rotoiti, Okataina, and Tarawera (10 each) just before the start of the season. Each white-coloured fish tag carries a special number that corresponds to a pre-sealed numbered envelope, and one of those 30 envelopes holds the grand prize. Other prizes include a Yamaha 2hp outboard motor valued at $950 and 28 $200 tackle voucher.
Fish & Game eastern region manager Andy Garrick says the about promotion is about inspiring people to get their licences and get out there fishing.
“The promotion aims to inject some additional suspense into the new season, whether it be for families out on the lake boating or shore-based fishers. We have seen in the past that Fish for Gold generates a fair bit of banter and competition amongst anglers as fish are pulled in.”
He adds that “while it is a bit of a lucky dip really, obviously the more time you spend out there, the better the odds.”
Entry is free for anglers but they do need to have a 2019/20 Fish & game fishing license and need to register online prior to opening day. Children under 12 are not eligible to enter on a free child’s licence but can if they are included as part of a family fishing licence.
